What happened to cause a data breach at Ticketmaster?

A hack occurred sometime between February and June 2018 and saw the personal and financial details of Ticketmaster customers stolen by hackers. This affected around 40,000 customers of the ticketing website who bought tickets through Ticketmaster UK, GETMEIN! and Ticketweb. Some international customers may have been affected between September 2017 and June 23 2018.

The information stolen by the hackers included:

  • names
  • postal addresses
  • email addresses
  • telephone numbers
  • payment details
  • Ticketmaster login details

Ticketmaster blamed the data breach on a hack carried out using malicious software or malware that targeted a third-party chatbot customer support system managed by partner Inbenta Technologies, that Ticketmaster had been using on its payment pages at the time. On discovering the hack on June 23 2018, the company informed all the relevant authorities, including the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), and affected customers were informed on June 27.

Can I make a data breach claim?

If you’ve been a victim of a data breach then yes, it is likely you can make a claim. Usually you will have been informed by the business or organisation, possibly by email, that there has been a data breach.

In other instances there may be a group litigation claim whereby a large number of customers can be part of a collective claim, for example when a data breach occurs between a set time period. If you were a customer during this time, then it is quite possible that you have been affected by the data breach.

If you have been a victim of a data breach then you may be entitled to compensation. Even if the breach has not led to any specific loss to you, you are still entitled to claim compensation for distress and inconvenience caused by a data breach.

Commonly asked questions

An organisation is required under GDPR to inform you if they have breached your personal data in any way, and typically the first you might hear about it would be an email from the company concerned. Despite this, you may not know about a data breach by a particular company until you hear that they have been fined by the Information Commissioner’s Office ICO. When you contact us, we’ll get in touch with the company in question and use any information available from the ICO to establish whether your data has been breached.

If an organisation has failed to protect your data, you are entitled to claim compensation regardless of whether you have suffered any losses or not. We can make a claim on your behalf for anguish or anxiety caused by a data breach, but if you have suffered financial harm as a direct result of the breach, the amount of compensation you might be able to claim would likely be far greater..

Each data breach claim will be looked at on its own merits, but in most cases where a claim for distress has been made, the minimum level of damages would usually be in the region of a £1,000. Much depends on the circumstances of the breach and any impact. Where the data breach has caused significant financial loss or the leak of highly sensitive personal data, then the level of compensation could be significantly higher.

We work on a No Win, No Fee basis, so this means that if your claim is not successful, you will not owe us a thing. Only in the event of a successful compensation claim would you be required to pay us a percentage of your settlement, so there is absolutely no risk involved in making a data breach claim.
